Chapter 5A Chapter by Karleem JohnsonDr. Maya and the Inspector have to go one without Mc'Swinn, and they run into unexpected obstaclesInspector Daniels sighed heavily as he checked his ammo. “Bad news doctor, I’m almost out so whatever we face in there….” He nodded towards the door as he spoke to Dr. Maya. “We’ll just have to figure something out that doesn’t involve shooting, save that ammo for when we REALLY need it. Who knows, maybe this will hallway will be just that, a hallway.” Maya replied with a chuckle as she re-tied her sneakers. “One can hope…hey listen, I realize that this might not be the appropriate time and all Doctor, but uhh…I…umm…I mean if we got out of this alive, and the world hasn’t ended…do you think that maybe you’d want to go out sometime? Not like a date! Like a…hangout? Or some-” Dr. Maya placed a finger on the Inspector’s soft lips, shushing him. “I’d love to go on a DATE with you…if we survive this. And call me Maya, okay?” The Inspector smiled brightly as he replied. “Okay Maya…” Dr. Maya smiled warmly as she grabbed ahold of the doorknob. “Are you ready?” The Inspector nodded and drew his knives as Dr. Maya slowly opened the door to a chorus of snarls and growls. The corridor seemed a lot longer than it should’ve been, it was packed with more of the grotesque residents and sooty ash blanketed the floor as it rained down from the ceiling, two huge residents stood guard at the end of the corridor, their horned heads scraping the ceiling. Dr. Maya gasped as Inspector Daniels tightened his grip around his knives; suddenly the hand he held the feather in began to grow hotter and hotter, until it glowed a bright orange color and burst into flame, it did not hurt, nor did it burn. He felt courage and joy rush through him as a sign on his forehead began to shine. His knives glowed red-hot as one lengthened into a full broadsword and the other expanded into a shield, thick armor plates began to quickly build themselves over and his guns melted into a spiked mace interspersed with lines of molten metal, his new armor cooled almost as soon as it was finished creating itself, the silver and gold armor shone brightly in the dim hallway. The mutated residents howled and roared as Dr. Maya’s clothing erupted into heatless flame, the sign on her forehead shining brightly; the flames suddenly went out, leaving her in padded leather armor with iron studded knuckles, elbows, toes and knees. A bright golden red band held her hair in a tight pony tail, and a fire opal embedded gold circlet sat upon her brow, two sturdy short battle rods appeared on her back in a tight leather loop. The image of a bright red hawk painted itself on her back as a bright red plume of feathers grew from the top of the Inspector’s helm; he exchanged an elated glance with Dr. Maya then charged into the snarling residents with his shield, Dr. Maya leapt over his shoulder, crunching bone under her feet as she landed on the spiked jaw of a resident then slammed her elbow into the ribcage of another. Inspector Daniels swung his heavy blade in wide arcs, dismembering residents left and right, smashed his shield into a resident with long bony blades for arms, and then knocked another into the air. Dr. Maya twisted in midair, slammed her foot into a resident that had been launched into the air, knocking it into its comrades as she landed on the head of another with another sickening crunch and Inspector Daniels charged through the corridor with his shield, breaking anything that got in his way. Inspector Daniels and Dr. Maya quickly progressed through the corridor, killing or disabling every altered resident they encountered as they worked their way to the two giant residents guarding the exit. Each resident had a thick blade of bone and a huge bone covered arm instead of hands, their bodies were built like oak trees and their faces seemed to be made of a solid bone platelet with two tiny eyeholes carved into it; Dr. Maya approached them as Inspector Daniels dispatched the last resident. “Let us through, or die.” She exclaimed as she drew her battle rods, snapped them together to form a staff, and pointed to the door in one smooth motion. A moment of silence passed, and then the giant’s bodies began to swell, their flesh and muscle ballooning, mushrooming to grotesque sizes and proportions as agonized groans escaped from their bony faceplates. “MAYA!” The Inspector shouted as he jumped in front of her and slammed his shield down, the giants exploded, splattering bloody chunks of viscera against his shield and painting the walls red. “The hell was that? Ugh…it’s EVERYwhere!” Dr. Maya stood as she spoke, surveying the bloodied corridor as the Inspector pulled his shield from the shattered tiling. “I don’t know, maybe we’ve won…” A low growl rumbled through the hallway, causing the Inspector’s words to die on his lips and drawing Dr. Maya’s gaze. Something slowly lifted itself from the quivering pile of entrails; a bleached white goat skull with long dark curved horns and fully formed eyeballs served as its head, thick, dark, blood slicked fur covered its body everywhere except its long rat-like tail, short bony spines traced its spinal column and ribcage, it held two large, hooked, bloody cleavers in each clawed hand. Another stepped from behind it; this one carrying a massive bloody cleaver, the creatures glared hatefully, then charged at Dr. Maya and the Inspector with an ear shattering roar.
