Arctic City pt.1A Story by Karleem JohnsonThis is a story i did, based in my city with alter egos of my closest friends and my younger sisterDavid shook the snow off of his coat as he stamped his boots, as a long time resident of Grand Rapids he’d seen a lot of blizzards, but this was by far the worst. Winds upward of 190 mph, temperatures reaching 20 below, and the heaviest snowfall he had ever seen in his life, some people were calling it the new ice age and locking themselves in basements, while others were trying desperately to leave the city. He gave a low chuckle as he set his groceries down and began to peel his many layers of clothing off. This was his city, he grew up on the Gun Rue, and he planned to die here, like his father, and his grandmother. “Dave? Is that you man?” Sean, his best friend and roommate, called from the living room. “Of course it’s me! Who else would it be dickwad?” David called back jokingly as Sean shuffled into the room in his pajamas. Dave and Sean were complete opposites, Sean was pecan brown with almost zero body hair and very short, he was also very strong. Whereas David was tall, hairy, pale, and on the heavy side, he wasn’t as strong as David, but his aim was much better and he had a hell of a right hook. “Dude….I’m starving, tell me you didn’t spend our well earned money on anything but food?” Sean mumbled as he fished another blunt from the ears of his wolf hat and passed it to David. David worked at the Kwik-E-Mart on the corner, and Sean worked at a local bookstore. “BRO! You got started without me!” David gasped in mock horror. “Hey, I only smoked my half, and I even rolled you one…” Sean mumbled as he rummaged through the grocery bags. “Is it getting any better? Or is it still Hoth?” Sean asked as he started on a large bag of chips. “Hoth. Totally Hoth.” David said as he dug in the bag of chips with one hand and lighting the blunt between his lips with the other. David awoke on the couch to the sound of someone banging on his door, his mouth felt like cotton and his head was still fuzzy as he stepped over chip wrappers and a softly snoring Sean. He grabbed a bottle of water and chugged it as he answered the door. “Who is it?” He asked with a yawn. “IT’S ME! MAY! OPEN THE DAMN DOOR, I’M FREEZING MY TITS OFF!!! It’s Jay too! Don’t forget me! And don’t worry babe, if your tits fall off I’ll catch ‘em.” David quickly opened the door, a warm smile plastered on his face. May was hazelnut brown and about as tall as Sean (maybe shorter), her husband, Jay, was almost as pale as David, and the tallest person there, his long blonde hair was pulled into a snowy ponytail down his back. They shuffled in and David pushed against the wind to shut the door. “Huh…smells like y’all already got started!” Jay said with a smile. “Jay! Tell them what we saw!” May said as she poked Jay. “Oh yeah, so we saw the freakiest s**t! There was this-” Jay was rudely interrupted as Sean elbowed past him to get his coat. He held his phone to his ear tightly and his face was a grim mask of determination. “Don’t worry, I’ll be there soon! Calm down! No, she’s snowed in at her mom’s house! Look, just chill! Stay there, I’m coming for you!” Sean talked quickly as he pulled his boots on. “Whoa! What’s wrong? Is it Anny?” May asked as she helped Sean get his coat on. “No, it’s Roxanna, she’s snowed in at my moms and their power went out, she’s freaking out…talking about monsters and s**t.” The happiness in the room died, Roxanna was one of Sean’s baby sisters. “Whoa! You can’t go out there like that!” Jay said as he placed his hand on Sean’s shoulder. Sean slapped his arm away. “THAT’S MY SISTER MAN!!! AND SHE’S THERE WITH MY FAMILY!! MY BABY BROTHERS! MY MOM!!” Sean yelled. “Whoa whoa whoa! Calm down broski, here, smoke a cig.” David said as he handed Sean a cigarette and began packing as much canned and boxed food as he could into backpacks. “He can’t not go Jay, that’s his fam..” May and Jay traded glances. “Then hear us out first, that’s what we were going to tell you.” Jay said as Sean shakily lit the cigarette. “We were crossing division, and we saw some freaky s**t. There was this pack of huge blue…well…wolves. They were running beside one of those job corps buses, smashing against the sides of it and making it swerve. When it crashed they began tearing into the passengers….” Sean grimaced. “This is NOT the time to bullshit!!” He yelled. “No bullshit man, look.” Jay said sadly as he passed his phone to Sean. Everyone huddled around the little phone, and watched the video, complete with May and Jay’s shocked commentary. When it was over Sean silently walked to the closet and pulled three large boxes out. “Been saving these for an emergency…this totally counts.” He said as he pulled two long knives complete and a machete from one box, then a .38 Magnum and 9 Millimeter desert eagle from the second box. “Only have three of these.” He said as he reached into the third box and pulled a hand grenade out. David, May, and Jay stared in awed silence. “Where in the f**k did you get those from???” David asked incredulously as he and the others made their way to the boxes. “An old friend.” Sean replied, strapping the weapons to his legs and torso tightly. “Holy f**k man!” May said as she pulled a thick black briefcase out and snapped it open. “Yeah, I don’t know how to put that one together..” Sean answered as the others pulled various weapons out of the boxes. “I do” Jay said as he glanced in the briefcase and began slowly taking pieces out. Sean hefted a backpack on and then slowly turned around. “Uhm…what are ‘all doing?” David looked up and huffed. “Pfft! Come on bro! We can’t let you go out there and face Hoth by yourself!! Besides when else are we going to get the chance to be total badasses??” Sean smiled widely, quickly walked to David and gave him a tight hug. “Thanks bro…really…thanks y’all.” “No problem bro! You know we got your back! You fam!!” David said. “Now…let’s get going before we all puss out!” May said with a laugh. Sean nodded and stepped outside, then began to lead the way.
