Jennifer paced her room as her phone rang; there was no way in hell she was going to answer. People had been calling her all day asking about Demarcus, he hadn’t been seen or heard from in almost a week. Not even his father knew where he was…a part of her hoped he was okay…and a part of her wished that he was dead…it had been about two weeks since they had argued. She was partying with some friends, but she told him that she was studying. A friend tipped him off and he showed up, catching her grinding on another man, he broke the man’s nose and cussed her out, she knew he was pissed because his usually hidden southern accent could be heard clearly. She told him that he was no fun, he was always immersed in his stupid creepy books, and that if she knew that he was going to be such a nerd, she never would’ve went on that first date a year ago. He responded by calling her w***e and saying that he was sick of her, that she needed to grow up. The argument worsened from there and ended with her sobbing on her bed and him storming out of her house, past her mother and siblings, and into the cold January night.

“JENNIFER!!” Her mother’s called from downstairs, her barely perceptible accent turning the J into an H. “You okay up there? You want anything baby? Some hot chocolate maybe?” Her mother asked sweetly. “No ma, I’m good….” She replied through her door as she sunk to the floor. She stared into the distance, her eyes falling upon a fuzzy pink mirror on the floor; she flipped it over and focused on the familiar girl staring back. Pretty face, full lips, large curved pecan brown eyes with ruined mascara streaking down smooth hazelnut brown skin, her blonde tipped dark hair hung low around her face, she knew that she was pretty, she had known since 1st grade, the same way she knew she had the “right” curves since 7th grade. A light tapping on her window scared her, causing her to snap her head towards the window, where Demarcus waited.

Jennifer gasped and ran to the window as her heart filled with happiness and dread, what if he had only come back to leave for good? She unlatched the window and helped him in, then ran and locked her door “How did you get up there? There’s not even a tree!” She whispered. Demarcus looked as good as ever, but something was off. His creamy milk chocolate skin and tight cornrows seemed a bit too perfect, his amber eyes seemed to have lost their light, and his perfect white smile reminded her of a snake or a wolf for some reason. He wore the same black slipknot t-shirt he always wore, with the same black jeans, and the same black combat boots as he took one step and pulled her into his arms tightly.

Jennifer’s resolve crumbled and she burst into tears. “I’m sorry boo, I didn’t mean what I said…do you…do you forgive me?” She asked with her face buried into his chest. “Of course I do bae, I didn’t mean what I said either and I’m sorry for leaving for so long.” Demarcus said as he stroked her hair soothingly, his voice was much deeper than she remembered it being, and he seemed to be packed with a LOT more muscle than she recalled. Something was missing…but she couldn’t place her finger on it. Suddenly she knew what was missing. His heartbeat. It was one of her favorite sounds; she had grown as accustomed to it as his warmth. Her eyes widened, come to think of it, she couldn’t hear or feel him breathing either and his skin was ice cold. She pushed away quickly, and slowly backed toward her dresser, where her emergency gun lay.

“Baby…what going on? Where have you been all this time?” Her hand closed around .38 snub nosed revolver as Demarcus smiled slowly. “I’ve been…studying, you could say. Why?” Jennifer whipped the gun out and aimed it straight at Demarcus. “What’s going on Marcus? Don’t play with me!” Jennifer cocked the gun, and with a blur Demarcus was behind her with the gun in his hand. She shrieked and ran to the other side of the room as Demarcus’s eyes blackened; his pupil burned bright red in a sea of black. All of his teeth grew wide and sharp and bony spines pushed through his forearms as his fingers curled into black claws, his ears grew pointed and the skin around his mouth cracked like ice. Before Jennifer could scream he shot across the room and pulled her into his arms silently. “Sshh…..calm down babygirl, it’s still me. I’m still your man…remember?” Memories of her and Demarcus flashed through Jennifer’s head like a slideshow as his deep voice warmed her soul. “Si…I…I remember…but what happened bae?” Jennifer replied softly. “Don’t worry about that lil ma…I’ll tell you later…you love me right?” He asked, his voice practically dripping with affection as he kissed her neck, sending a shiver down her spine. “Of course I love you papi…” She moaned. He nodded and kissed her bare shoulder softly. “Then will you help me? I’m so hungry…so…hungry” He said as he slowly kissed her neck. Jennifer nodded, unable to speak as Demarcus kissed her neck again, and then bit into it. She shuddered and went limp as pleasure dulled the pain in her neck; Demarcus finished and pulled free with a wet pop, and then picked her weak body up as her mind went hazy.

Jennifer woke with burning thirst, she greedily gulped the glass of water by the bed down, but it didn’t help, her throat felt like parchment and her stomach rumbled loudly. “So….thirsty…” She moaned. A delicious scent tickled her nostrils and caused her mouth to water, as Demarcus put a cup in front of her. She snatched it and drank greedily, licking the cup clean afterwards. “What was that?? I NEED MORE!!” She shouted, grabbing Demarcus by the collar of his shirt as he smiled. “Not what bae, you mean who. That was a cup of Jacqueline…” Jennifer hopped out of bed and stared in horror at her 17 year old younger sister, sprawled on the floor, with her wrist neatly cut open. But her horror was quickly replaced by a hunger like none she had ever felt before. It seemed to consume her, and before she knew it she was greedily drinking the rest of Jacqueline’s life away. The world took on a brighter sheen, as if she had been wearing sunglasses her whole life and suddenly removed them, every cell in her body felt supercharged, her muscles screamed with raw power and her new claws ached to rend and tear. Her sensitive nose picked up a myriad of delicious smells as the rest of her family burst into her room. Her mother stared in horror as her siblings wept freely. Jennifer opened her mouth to apologize, but only two words came out: “Soo….HUNGRY!!” She pounced from the left as Demarcus pounced from the right, her hunger would soon be sated.
