Love, Life, and Hope

Love, Life, and Hope

A Poem by Karleem Johnson

Twisting,

shining,

glittering,

enticing me,

and when i

reach to touch

you i can feel

you slicing me.

Inky and black,

choking me

as if i'm

trapped inside

a smokestack,

filling every pore

of me,

seeping out

through my cracks,

and when it's gone

i beg for my darkness back.

Smashing on those

hard beliefs,

shattering against

them like glass

in a hurricane,

burning and swishing

like whiskey in

my veins,

certain things inside

me sing,

while others scream,

life lifts me

up on heavenly wings,

then brings me to my knees

with demonic scenes.

None may pass without

this pain,

so show me your scars,

your damaged frame,

and i promise you'll

never be the same.
