My Best

My Best

A Poem by Karleem Johnson

My love,

how i wish

you could see

into my head,

then you'd see

how jumbled it is,

how it's a total mess.

I don't know

what i'm doing,

not one little bit,

i'll think that i do

but then i'll second guess,

all this pain i'm causing,

is me trying to do my best.

It sometimes feels

to me like

i've ripped the still

beating heart from your chest,

my soul cries out within me,

my heart won't give me rest,

and still that small insistent part

of me says: "You know that this

is best."
