Prologue
A Chapter by blackcayne
It was spring... Yes, I loved spring.
Iones' POV. It was spring... Yes, I loved spring. I loved the smell of the breeze, carrying the scent of flowers and wood far across the countryside. The sky was clear and there wasn't a cloud to be seen for miles around. I looked to my left to see my best friend, Justin. I grinned as he looked towards me shyly.
"Justin look!" I squealed, pointing towards the house cat, Murphy. "He's coming to meet us!"
We were walking back from our small countryside school with only a small population of thirty.
Justin smiled, faintly, before I saw a sliver of what looked like silver mist slide down the back of his neck. He gasped and hunched to the floor, whining from some sort of pain that seemed to affect his whole body with his body shaking uncontrollably.
Suddenly the soft spring breeze seemed scary and icy.
Quickly kneeling down next to him with my eyebrows pulling together from worry, I asked, "Justin! Justin, are you okay?" "I'm sorry," He whimpered, before his normally blue eyes glinted and turned a dark shade of red in the fading light. He stood up quickly, with no emotions playing on his usual happy face and walked towards me slowly.
"Ju- Justin, what are you doi-," I questioned. Before I could finish my sentence he wrapped a hand aroundy throat and squeezed. My hands immediately came up to grasp his thin arms. I could feel him trembling with his face flickering from terrified to emotionless and back as I attempted to grasp any sliver air into my lungs.
"Please, Justin," I choked out, tears starting to roll down my face.
His face stopped flickering with expressions and his pupils glowed blood red as the edges of his lips slowly turned up. I heard him giggle as my six year old brain started to run out of air. My vision started to fade but before I could suffocate, a figure came out of nowhere, tackling Justin to the floor.
I crumpled onto the dirt road, my eyes still hazy. The figure was on top of Justin but suddenly, it lurched forward and gave a painful gasp.
My vision cleared a little to see that the figure was my mother. She was lying on the ground, facing me with the normally bright green light in her eyes dimming.
"Be strong, Ione, my beloved daughter. Forget all your troubles, live a happy life," she whispered out. "My baby girl," Everything around her figure faded to darkness as I crawled frantically to her form. "Mum! Mum! Wake up!" I whispered through my damaged throat and my already hoarse voice grew hoarser as I cried out, "Don't leave me." I felt the tears well up in my eyes. She gave one last smile and and repeated her to be last words. "I love you."
***
"Mum!" I screamed, sitting up in my bed. Blinking, I realised that it was all a dream... Or was it? Flopping myself back onto my sheets I stared up at the ceiling. "Maybe that's why I hate spring," I whispered.
