Pain

Pain

A Poem by Drako

Heart don't fail me now, courage don't desert me
Do not turn from the pain
Face it now, take it head on

The pain is familiar, yet altogether different
It is never-ending
The cause is the same, and yet it has changed

The pain always has a face, and the face has changed
Lighter, prettier, more desirable
Yet the same as the one before

Everything I thought I wanted
In the end my desire must be pain
Each time my interest peaks
The pain soon follows

I cannot run from this
I must confront it
Any chance of recovery comes in this

Pain, my friend and lover
my constant companion
Once again I gaze into your depths

I saw you coming
I thought I was prepared
But now I have hit the icy cold waters
I realize again that I cannot prepare for you

My heart and soul have entered shock
Frozen in the arctic
Floating on the surface now,
adrift in stormy waters

So familiar that I'm almost calm
Comfortable, as close to ease as I can get
With this newest venture into your depths
I feel as if I'm on a journey through my past
Perhaps even headed to my past

This pain is too familiar
the arctic not so cold
The source is different
but the effects are the same
The end result is the same

Or is it?
Can one destroy a heart that has been destroyed before?
Can a soul shatter more than once?
Where is the rescue from these cold painful waters?
