Memories of Spring

Memories of Spring

A Poem by Drako
"

this was a class assignment in creative writing my senior year of high school. i was given a picture of an old, rusty car in a field, and told to write a poem about it within a time limit.

"
Now an older man
I look outside on a clear spring day
In the driveway sits three cars
In my mind I go back to 1958
I remember my first car
A four door Chrysler
White with leather interior
The windows were down
The breeze cooling my sunburned skin
The sweet smell of spring air
And it seemed as if it would never end
I remember how hard i worked for that car
A year's worth of pay saved up
All so I could cruise with my friends
on clear spring days
Now I have three that I didn't save for at all
And I wonder what happened to that Chrysler
I imagine it as it was then
though I know it probably sits
In an abandoned field
Rusted over, dirty, unrecognizable
It's been about thirty years since I saw it last
I hope someone else had the pleasure of driving it
Especially on a clear spring day
