HEART OF A WARRIOR

HEART OF A WARRIOR

A Poem by Bill Grimes Jr.

It takes a mighty effort
To venture into hell
Willing
With noble fierce intent
Seeking those who suffer
Arms open wide
Merciful
Sincere
Tremendous inner strength
To overcome the nauseous stench
Squalor reeks
Rotting teeth
Urine stained skin
Filthy clothing
Sadly worn for weeks
Even the strongest shall wince
At such a wretched state
As shunned lepers of old
Our homeless suffer greatly
Ignored
Spat upon in disgust
It is there
Among the destitute
You will find Jesus
Walking in the vile stew of poverty
Calling gently
Urging blind faith of martyrdom
To serve others
Rise above the fear
As a doormat at times
The true heart of a warrior

“He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.

Proverbs 14:21

Nice work! Sad that we treat people so differently depending upon their financial status. I once heard a cliche, which states that we're all one paycheck away from living in a cardboard box. The adage has never been so true as it is in today's world. People who were accustomed to making a decent living are being forced from their homes in droves, and yet mainstream society never thinks it will happen to them.

Oh, this is mighty! I have a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. How true are these words. Every day I am grateful for what I can do for myself and my family. Every day I try to be kind. I work in a city with many "lost" people... And I always think - these people belong to someone - these people belong as much as I do.... some will be helped, some don't want help, some are so ill - which is compounded by life on the street.... my heart goes out.... Thanks for expressing such deep emotion to be shared here.
