BITTERSWEET CONCLUSION

BITTERSWEET CONCLUSION

A Poem by Bill Grimes Jr.

Endless paths
Lead to similar conclusions
Often lost
Obviously programmed
Such strange embryonic wiring
Curiosity drives the lad
The elder expired long ago
I wonder if gestation
Fully developed to begin with
Moldy walls
Surround the sacred city
Heartbeat of musical thought
The sound check
Fell upon deaf ears
Frail naked emperor
Stands before his loyal subjects
Petals of the sweet narcissus
Strewn along symbolic skyways
Bittersweet conclusion
Our hero walks alone

This piece is very powerful, Bill. For me it evokes a sense of lonliness behind the power.

Beautifully controlled: Especially loved these lines:
Surround the sacred city
Heartbeat of musical thought

and

Petals of the sweet narcissus
Strewn along symbolic skyways
Bittersweet conclusion
Our hero walks alone

Melancholy, but beautiful not necessarily in the lighter way, but of a darker, of something lingering beneath, the sadness is visible through certain word choices like 'alone', 'bittersweet'. Beautifully controlled though as well as instrospectively. Thank you for the read.
