This magic was absolutely silent, a complete contrast to the raucous ceremonies of Medahir.
The diagrams were drawn in the air: chalk scratched and squeaked. The incantations were thought in the mind, perhaps mouthed for those who needed more concentration.
Her concentration was on the spell. His concentration was on her technique. "Quiet. Absolutely quiet," she warned.
They called it a game; learning this magic. A silent magic would hurt no one, even if it was forbidden.
He shifted his balance, a board creaking ever so slightly. Within an instant, the room, the diagrams, and the youth went up in flames. Their silent game had ended.
But the quiet magic lived on.
