CHRYSALIS

When in your cocoon you lay

Wriggling, squirming all day

Did you think and dream

Of what you might be one day?

Did you teach yourself patience?

The value of calmness, of penance?

The eternal wait

Before the glorious flight?

As you shook free

Of your moorings

Did you hover and smile

In mid flight

Over the cage that held

Yet helped?

In earth’s cocoon they wait

Lamenting their existence

Unaware of wings

That from the soul springs

To tell you, ‘You were always free!’
