Goebel's Luck

Goebel's Luck

A Poem by Bradley Fugate
"

One about luck and fate and patience for destruction.

"

O’ how Dante knows!

And you, do you see?

The harsh bitten humor in all living things

Even that buried in the most bitter of ironies

I’m afraid they make known their presence to me

How is it that every turn presents yet another mockery?

At the rooftops with their leveled eyes

Keeping watch on the leaves and flies

I wonder if the stolid stones and fingerprinted glass

Weep for our dignities and guilt ridden pasts

There was never a lily to over gild

No vacant fatherly shoes needing to be filled

No course to keep on that would be false

Only you and the focus that you exhaust

With keeping yourself on that beaten path

We are but missing numbers in a remedial math

There is a simple solution in an array of distractions

The fates we tend in the impossible fathoms

Of impulsive actions

Who could possibly ever know?

What this moment might lead to and where the next one goes

The answer is simple

You never know

You can plan for nothing.

Author's Note

Bradley Fugate
William Goebel was Governor of Kentucky for 4 days in 1900 before he was assassinated. They say he was a bit of a butt hole and lacking in social skills but highly intelligent.
