In Effigy

In Effigy

A Poem by Elizabeth

day old fish smells better than the roses you left on my doorstep
and when you shift your weight from one foot to another
I know you are lying

anyway, love

last night I burned rotten fish entrails
in effigy

a fitting tribute, I thought
to your smile

In my experience you shouldn't be with someone who thinks they're smarter than you. It's only a matter of time till they try and pull the wool over your eyes. As for the poem... I really dug this. I'll apologize for generalizing in advance but women tend to victimize themselves in their poetry. At least as far as what I've read on this site. Such was not the case here. I found this to be strong and fierce. Stoke the fire!
