Nicknames

A Poem by J.P.

nick’name’ (-nam’), n. 1. A name given in derision or sportive familiarity. 2. A familiar diminutive name.

Neither you nor I can pick ‘em.

They must be given.

There’s a story behind each one.

New father, 2 in the morning, trying to soothe newborn son, mumbles what should be, “Buddy, what’s the matter?”

It spews out as Butter.

A sobriquet is born.

I know a Shroomer, thus named for obvious reasons.

He is now a guardian of The Gateway to the South.

The Lion, Old Blood and Guts, Mr. Hockey, Super Mario, Grapes, The Little Ball of Hate, Papa, The Professor, The Walrus, Gonzo, Hammerin’ Hank, Teddy Ballgame, Spaceman, Bulldog, Arriba, The Great One, The Gentleman Saint

Some think ‘em nuts, I think genius.

Me too.

J to the P, J Peanut, Zooly, Nyarit, Horsemouth

from the Carousel Capital of Ohio

to Baghdad on the Bayou

and back to The North Coast
