The Traveler

The Traveler

A Story by ben

There is no hiding the fact that Lilly is walking slower than usual and with him expecting this, considers the leaf tightly packed within the tin resting against his heart. A whole one might be too much, but thinking half will do her well, waits for her and after she is aside him, he says, “Hold on a second.” Lilly does by keeping her eyes on Wolf rather than him as he takes out the tin. Cap off, dips his fingers inside to where he pulls out a leaf. Torn in half, hands the piece to Lilly. “Chew on that, it will help.”

Lilly hesitates, “Are you sure, I mean, my gut is not in the best of moods right now.”

“It will help.”

Still unsure, she places the hunk of leaf within her mouth. Giving a chew and then another, a look of surprise has her saying, “Are you kidding me. Okay, so, do I have superpowers because it sure does feel like I do.”

“Does that mean you feel better?”

“Yeah, and then some.”

“Thirsty?”

“A little.”

Water jug off his shoulder and handed over to her, Lilly goes about uncapping the spout but before she takes in what she can, she says to him, “Those three men who stole my mule are close, aren’t they?”

“Yes.”

“Thought so.”

Having her fill then, Lilly hands the jug back to him and once the jug is slung into place, wasting not a moment longer, he takes the lead in moving the two of them along into the seedier part of town.
