The Traveler

The Traveler

A Story by ben

Onward they go in taking on the slight rise and after reaching the end of it, having only one way to go, the first building they see is a fire station that has its bay doors wide open. Tucked inside the structure, and looking dusty upon its flat tires, is a lone pumper sitting alongside a first response vehicle sharing the same fate. Nothing to see here, the two move on to where they are walking by an apartment complex whose fenced playground is void of laughter.

Wearing a soft look upon her face, she glances his way to where their eyes linger as she leaves him thinking all it takes is that one look that will have him understanding what she is going through right here, right now. Helping him to cope with the sudden intrusion is Izzo’s loving reminder. “It’s the little things that will bring forth your soft side.” Holding on to her delicate words, finds himself stepping aside until the weight of having things to do breaks his silence.

“We should go.”

“Yeah, okay.” Shifting the weight of Wolf around, Lilly walks ahead to where he catches up to her. Nothing is said as nothing needs to be even as the block ends and with no reason to look both ways, on either side of them are rows of houses once called home.
