The Traveler

The Traveler

A Story by ben

Silent he is in kicking back all the while watching the visual arts show that lasts up to the point of the glowing stick running out of ink. Automatic is Lilly shoving the end of the branch deep within the bed of coals and tuned in to all that she is doing, being abstract in picking out the smallest of things, the bold of it all is Lilly hugging the warmth of the fire which leads to the smaller being that she has a spoon and not much else.

Adding truth to what observed, is a breeze carrying a hint of rain. Turning her gaze up to him, Lilly says, “There’s a car back there if it starts to rain.” So simply said, for a moment, he is lost in visualizing the two of them fighting for room. “You can go along if you want. I’ll stay here and mind the fire.” Unsure is her look before she fires back. “Be that way. Can I tell you something?” Like she hasn’t told him enough already. “Sure. Go ahead.”

It could be that she picked up on his impatience and though having none, instead of speaking her mind, Lilly pulls the stick from the coals and then goes to making wide circles in the night sky. Counterclockwise is the spinning trails doing all it can before disappearing into a hazy impression that has him bringing attention around to the chunks of searing meat in need of being turned. Easy to do, and after a brief check to, gets to thinking the time is right that has him removing the pot in giving the liquid time to cool. Lilly, after picking up on his movements, ceases her waving that leaves him captured in a nonverbal look demanding an answer to an unspoken question.
