D-Day

D-Day

A Poem by Ben Rogers
"

This is a poem about a relationship and an inevitable break up.

"

She read me yesterday’s news

her words screaming-

Remember when we were the best

of me and you.

And then the silence,

Hanging like the morning haze

as her mind flicked through important days,

Hoping they were enough.

My heart beating in my teeth,

I couldn’t move my lips

for fear of her next word being goodbye.

Her eyes waved as she left,

blowing that silence through the rooms around me.

Now it clogs my ears as people speak

as I snort the lines of love songs

in the hope I feel something other than alone

I’m re-reading her love notes,

Re-watching films

Re-listening to albums

As if this is the final time they won’t be tainted

Come Monday

The 20th of January becomes June 6th

And I’m jumping from a boat into the sand
