Juanita Blue [ode to my grandma the king of the lil'mamas]

Juanita Blue [ode to my grandma the king of the lil'mamas]

A Poem by bellyvankelly

King of all the lil’mamas

I think of you all the time

That magic brown fro that bounced

Around yo head, as you spun around

The kitchen cooking dinner

Always something healthy

Chicken and broccoli

That's boring I said

It's healthy you said

And there are no toys I’m bored

You handed me masking tape

And white construction paper

Make me something

you said and buzzed

Back into the kitchen

To check on the steaming broccoli

And steam escaped and bit you

Me and gramp smiled as you growled

Gramp said you okay mama

And you just growled again

But I cheered you up with slippers

I made from tape and paper

But I stole them cause you and I

Had the same size foot

After dinner, you would sneak

Me some chocolate in the middle

Of the nite

which was 8pm for you

Then we’d have a talk

Subject: everything

You had a deep understanding of

Everything I said, then after

You would give me a gentle

Hug that produced

A feel of indelible hope

That still guides me hitherto

That's why I haven't seen you again

I know you're just beyond the blue

I know when I die and open my eyes

I will see you

I will pull you close and give you that

Same hug--laying my head on your

Shoulder saying I love ya lil'mama

I missed you

And you whispering in my ear

Something like: yo poetry’s not bad kid.
