Prologue

A Chapter by Hailie

It all happened eleven years ago. It was my twin brother Gabriel and my first day of kindergarten, and we were excited to see our mother and tell her about all of our new friends. We ran into the house, calling out to her, but heard no response.

Thinking our single mother was up in her office with one of her brides, we pulled up a chair at the table and began eating the still warm chocolate chip cookies. I was pouring a glass of milk when we heard a scream and a crash coming from upstairs.

Dropping the jug of milk on the floor, I ran up the stairs with Gabriel, and stopped at the edge of my mothers door when I saw her lifeless eyes starring at me. A man was at her neck, looking almost as if he was kissing her. That was what I thought he was doing, until a drop of blood came from her neck.

Gasping, I froze in fear, not coherent of what the right thing to do was. Gabriel grabbed my hand and dragged me to his room where he hid us in his closet. Still frozen in shock, I didn’t notice the man walk into our room, or Gabriel crying silently in the corner.

I screamed when the door to the closet flew open. Finally snapping out of my daze, I kicked out at the stranger, only to realize I made a mistake as he grabbed my leg, pulling me out of the closet. Gabriel sat there with wide eyes, tears still pouring out of his eyes.

“Shh Natalya. I won’t hurt you dear. I had to do that to your mommy. She wouldn’t let me see you guys. I’m your father dear.”

“Liar. Mommy said lying is bad. Our daddy died in a fire last year at work. Put me down you freak,” I said kicking out at him again.

My wishes were answered as he threw me to the ground after hitting me across the face. He was on me instantly. Screaming and thrashing around, I tried to get him off of me, only to realize it was useless as he lowered his mouth to my neck and bit in, sucking the life out of my small body.

My vision was going dark. I felt myself slipping into oblivion when the pain and sucking stopped. My vision was slipping faster still, but the weight of his body was off of me, and Gabriel was leaning over me, speaking with no words coming out of his mouth.

Another, unrecognizable man came into my view, leaning over and taking my pulse as I slipped into the darkness. Later the next day, I woke to see the same man sitting by my bed in an unfamiliar room, speaking to a doctor.

“Ah, she’s awake,” the doctor said walking over to me and checking my vitals. A few minutes later, he left leaving me with the stranger. He smiled at me sadly, before taking my small hand in his large one.

“Natalya, my names Raymond Grey. Your mothers brother. Yesterday, you were attacked by a crazed ex of your mothers who was holding a grudge over dumping him for what he was.

“Your mother and I were raised to not ever trust one of his kind.”

“What is his kind?” I ask quietly.

“Have you ever heard of vampires?” He asked as I nodded. “That’s what he is dear. You and your brother are going to come stay with me in my home up in Alaska, alright honey?”

Nodding, I agreed to his offer, and walk into my new life.
