Trick Candle

Trick Candle

A Chapter by Bekah B

Burn burn
It only sparks
When you blow it out
Burn burn
Like a trick candle
On a birthday cake
Burn burn
It never ends
It's hot again
Burn burn
The harder you try
The stronger the flame
Keeps burning
For a moment a flicker
Catches your eye
You're convinced
This time it will die
Burn burn
Melting wax
And blackened wick
Burn burn
Some things are
And some will be
But the candlelight
Still holding on
Calls to me
Like an angry song
Burn burn
All the pages
Flicker on
Flicker off
Burn like a torch
Smolder like the cinders
Still bright
Still lit
Burn burn
Like the blazing fire
I know exists
Burn burn
If the candle holds
I'm coming home
Burn burn
Flicker off
Flicker on

I love the repetition of the simple phrase "burn burn" throughout. I thought it might grow wearisome after a while, but your wonderfully phrased lines that lie between it keep it fresh. Each well-crafted phrase adds to this sort of simmering tension that you build, propelling the story gently forward. Overall I say well done!
