Army Boots

Army Boots

A Chapter by Bekah B

The bloodred sun burns through the night
You're breathing dust in the morning light
Bombs are breaking over your town
Air raid sirens shake the ground
Take no prisoners, tell no lies
The strongest hearts, they never die
Politicians sent you out
Yet it's the patriots we doubt
But it's in the smile on a child's face
The trust in a widow's gaze
A dictator's fall from grace
That's the difference that you made

Put down your guns one final time
Raise your flag on the battle line
The sweat, the tears that you have shed
While others slept in their warm beds
Give you leave to come on home
To love the friends you left alone
And tell them that it's over now
All the danger's been shot down
But it's in the victim's stare
All those treated so unfair
The man who hopes he's brave
Those are the lives you saved

Take off your dusty Army boots
Sit down and stay a while
Your bitter war is over now
Don't you walk another mile.
Everything you had and more
Was laid bare upon the sand
But I know what you did for me
Freedom's in your calloused hands
Take off those dusty boots, my friend
Soldier, you're home again.

There's a subtle optimism in most of these pieces. I find that optimism pleasant and enjoyable, like tiny shards of light piercing the dark canvas that covers your world.
