Prescription

Prescription

A Chapter by Bekah B

The rapid patter of your heart
Is erratic, inconsistent, unreliable
The only thing it does with startling consistency
Is pulse and push the toxins
Around in dizzy circles through your veins
So you're drunk and high
And lit up like a string of lights
With just a couple bulbs blown out--
If a bottle of vodka is good
A handful of Vicodin must be better
And if that means you can't sleep later
One more cocktail-- Xanax and Ambien
Will solve that problem--
Slowing that pesky, pulsing heartbeat
So it doesn't ring in your ears
And in the morning if you wake
You slip out of bed and out the door
Cigarette drawling on chapped lips
Out into the tragic world
With the thrumming of your blood
Echoing inside your skull
Politely reminding you to medicate again today
