a poem for my dad

Happy Father’s Day dad,

I know it’s not actually Father’s Day but

Any day is enough for me to give you that extra hug

Or that extra love ya too dad

To ask you to let me cook dinner instead tonight

Or hey,

Let’s cook together

Let’s sing and dance around the kitchen like idiots

Whilst making abuela’s famous chicken and rice

 

Happy Father’s day dad,

Because you deserve to be happy every day

Laughing at those stupid punny dad jokes we make together

And almost fall off a chair after I fall off mine whilst snorting

Stopping whatever it is you’re doing when I yell out

Father!

Just so you can whip around to yell

What is it Daughter!

Right back at me

 

Happy Father’s Day dad,

Coz you’re an idiot that people care about

Even when you spill beer all over yourself from trying to open it with your hat

Or because you ‘missed your mouth’

 

Happy Father’s Day dad,

Because you deserve it,

You deserve everything

Because you’ve given me everything I could ever want

And when someone tells me I’m just like you it brings me such joy

To know that I am anything like my idol

 

Happy Father’s Day dad,

Because you’ve taught me so much

From writing my name,

Or playing pool,

To loving my family

 

Happy Father’s day dad,

For being a competitive jerk

You’ve never once gone easy on me in any game

Utterly crushing me in almost everything

But you gave me that Zielinski competitiveness

 

And happy Father’s Day dad,

Because you’re the best dad that I could have ever wished for

When you threaten hypothetical dates to not hurt your daughter

Or when you break down crying in a bowling alley because we’re

‘Having a moment’

And watching you smile and truly enjoy yourself,

Is the best possible feeling I could have as your proud daughter
