Awkward Teenage Pumpkins

Awkward Teenage Pumpkins

A Poem by Becca Bishop
"

There's not a very nice way to describe this so I'll just type in this box until I run out of characters. Today is Friday. I nearly ran over a cat driving home from school. I think I'll go and climb a

"

I bet you came to read this poem

Expecting something else.

I bet you didn’t think you’d find

A small piece of yourself.

I am an awkward teenage pumpkin.

Society defines me so -

But outside the layers peel away

And beneath I will forever glow.

I think you know what I’m trying to say -

I think you’re starting to see

While an artificial girl resides out here,

Inside I’m only me.

You’ve heard it once and time again

But did you really stop to think?

The canvas that you show the world

Has only drying paint.

Inside you are the purest you

And it’s there for you to see!

Though captured on the outside

Within you, you are free.

Please don’t think I mean it harshly,

Some people just don’t understand

That differences complete us,

That we all stand hand in hand.

I once was there - I once believed

That they were always right

They said I was an awkward pumpkin

And it wasn’t worth the fight.

I’m not trying to be all mushy

But please just look inside yourself

Society might define you

But it only does so with your help

I’m standing for the inside

Because when outside fades away

The real me that’s grown so strong

Won’t miss a single day.

I bet you read this thinking

It was something else instead

But since you started reading

Have you considered what I’ve said?

We’re all awkward teenage pumpkins

Society defines us so

But outside the layers peel away

And beneath I know that we all glow

Don't change it!! I don't know if you remember me, but I think this poem is wicked cool. When it gets you to think, draws many scenes in your head, short-stacks are adorable and the smell of skunks is neat, and it has a lot of catchy lines in it... that's awesome!! It's a favorite on my shelf, Becca Beccaliscious!! : ) xoxo -Your Mark

This is really well written, Becca A strong message all gift wrapped in your own brilliant humor, you convey this all important message using what? PUMPKINS!! (who would have thought that possible :D) but seriously this is a great write, a lot us have to be that person that society wants us to be even though we might want to break free and just run riot and I do feel we should let that out because like you say beneath we all glow. A truly inspiring write which anyone can relate to and learn from...great write Becca, well done!

I AM NOT an awkward pumpkin! I am a clumsy eggplant who delighted in reading this and once again you have given us a message writing spiced with your own unique style of humor that I love!

I Love this! I was thinking of doing a piece on how we all hold up a mask in front of our faces... the idea has been rumbling around in my head for awhile now... and here you have already written the piece... and in the form of a pumpkin no less! "That rotten Becca has stolen the thought right out of my brain! Thief! Thief!" lol...

Ah it is good to run across your stuff again. I love your style. Always clean and crisp. (I am not a fan of swearing in poems though I have wavered once or twice when my piece forced me to do it against my will ;-)
