Mordred

Mordred

A Poem by Becca Bishop
"

Mordred tells of his death from "beyond the beyond".

"

Legend has preserved me

And time has held my name.

Treachery in black armor

Heroic kingdom’s bane.

Darkened heart and darkened brow

My hands from death are stained.

But stay and listen closely

For truth begins to wane.

The dark in all is born again

In jealous anger’s rage.

And power beckons to the man

That forces wars to wage.

Across the stage of history’s face

Across the book’s blank page,

The story of Morgause’s son

Will march from age to age.

The Queen and secret lover fair

Would for their deeds defray

And seal the fate of Uther’s son

And kingdom’s threads would fray.

I waited then, beside the trees

As wind blew through the day

Waiting for the king to come

Whom fate had now betrayed.

As anger spread through love corrupt

The armies stood with bated breath

The need we have for hatreds cause

Would leave us all in empty death!

We charged with weapons held aloft

The armies clashed; the dead souls cried

And hardened men fell where they fought

The valiant knights who lived and died.

At last there only two remained

I in black, and he in white

And brightness would not cleanse my soul

Nor darkness kill the king's great light

We danced the battle dance with skill

Evading slash and sword’s sharp bite

But always dark betrays its own

And I was felled to last respite.

Yet while I lay in bleeding death

I struck at him with final force

To deliver death’s last kiss of pain

To rid the earth of Mordred’s source

He staggered back with dying breath

And looked at me with great remorse.

The blood flow slowed from open wound

And I departed from my course.

My tale ends though it goes on

Immortalized I live in lore

Betrayer of the kingdom’s peace

And may I be forevermore.

Blackness cloaks the name and brow

Of Arthur’s greatest foe abhorred.

Yet what I did were things of man

And that I did in times of yore.

Woe and hatred follow me

And death lies close behind

Yet never was there a sadder tale,

A bleaker one than mine

Lovely, I love how you've taken a fictitious character and given him more to say. Very well done!
