Pretend

Pretend

A Chapter by Ashton Smith

"Mom? I'm home!" Reagan yells as she enters the house in front of me, "Lu-Chase's truck stopped again. We got a ride with Marcus." Maggie Fielding walks around the corner with a dish towel in hand and smiles, "Really sweetie? I'm guessing you enjoyed that ride home." Reagan just blushes and walks up the rounded stairs to her room in the loft. Mom smiles at her back as she climbs the stairs in dangerously high heels. I sigh, "Mom, how long are you going to let her act like this. We all know she isn't a preppy cheerleader. Just like how last school she wasn't a goth girl or the school before that where everyone thought she was a geek." She tears up and whispers, "As long as she is making friends and happy then I couldn't care less how she choses to dress and act." I shake my head and shuffle out the back door to the garage. Time to get fixing the Ole Chevy, again.

1 year 6 months later

My name is Luke Fielding.

I am 18 years old.

I am a high school graduate.

I have been in hiding for 2 years.

Ever felt the true meaning of fear?

I have.

It consumes you.

Turns you into something you're not.

Truth is

Whatever you are hiding from,

ALWAYS catches up to you.

By then, you can lose those you most care about.
