1984 Chevrolet

1984 Chevrolet

A Chapter by Ashton Smith

My first day at a new school. I don't know why all the new kids say that it is a great adventure because you are starting fresh. I could care less. I want my home back and the friends I love. I want Abby.

Squeezing away those memories, I start the agonizingly long drive to school with no music. Dang it, why couldn't this truck have a radio. Stupid FBI couldn't even get a decent vehicle with a radio. The beat up red 1984 Chevrolet with rusty bumpers can barely make it on straight roads. Who knows how far up even a slight hill it would go.

Abby loved the old feel of anything.. I'm sure she would love this piece of crap. I wonder if she's trying to call me or has even noticed I'm missing yet. Maybe she has just assumed that a sick day was necessary after a "family bonding day." She won't miss me, why would she. I was always the one that sat in the background while she took center stage with plenty of friends around. Which was fine by me, that's how we worked and I liked it. But now, who will be the one encouraging her from the back? Never again will that lucky person be me.

If one more agent tells me it gets easier with time, they might just find themselves in a grave. No freaking way will this get easier. I should have never told my dad to take the back roads. "Just take it, it's way faster than the highway. Abby's waiting." There was no way we should have been on that road at that time if night, but we were. Caught in the wrong moment, at the wrong time. Changing our lives forever.
