elevator

elevator

A Poem by Amy Craig Beasley

elevator

   close

    cough

cough

elevator

  pound

     pound

smoke

elevator

burn

cough

the rising smoke

curling fingers grab my

neck

cough

pound pound

pound

hot

strangle

out

a

call

help me ---ring ring ringing up the shaft

rescue

a face

in the

dark

a strange - face

reach reach

can not reach

cough

fall

my leg

it is bleeding

down

with me

another now

in

the elevator

the doors

pried

in

time

in time

time

and

push

I am out

gasp

I

hold the

Oxygen

breate breathe  reach

 your hand

pushes me away

and

snap

snap

I know

your life

your

life

with

your life

I

am

a daughter

I hear of a daughter

your daughter

you say

a message

for

the living

No -- no

no

Reach

reach

snap

the elevator

the cable

snap -

........

tears

no

how can I

say

what I

have

to say

living

now

on behalf

of the

dead
