Warming up for Work

Warming up for Work

A Poem by Bear
"

The nightly routine, decades ago; getting my car to start so I might get to work on time each night.

"

I'm just a sentimental fool......

I get in my car

and I pump the gas

I turn her over

2 or 3 times

Then sit for 5 or so

and let her get warm

I just want to get

Drivin'

Drivin' on and on.

     I throw her in gear

     and go up the drive

     I drive on and on

     down the road

I pull out a cig

and light it up

I go around curves

up and down hills

journey through life

as I drive

     on and on.

I go on by the light of the moon

the stars are gleaming overhead

I think of friends

that I have known

I think of friends

that I'll get to know.

     The Moon is Min

     The Star is G---

     and I keep drivin'

         on and on.

I have my symbols

with me all the time;

     hanging in my car

     hanging upon my skin

     hanging in my life

     hanging in my mind...

but, I keep driving on.

Driving on and on.

Thinking and hanging- two words that you repeat that brilliantly, simply, describe life! And what you think and what you hang on to, can certainly determine the quality of that life. Your tone is nostalgic, warm, and with purpose-get to work, get it done, but enjoy the ride and the memories along the way. Love it, truly... The feeling of living life in the moment-- driving around bends, enjoying a cig, looking at the moon, but relishing the past, and looking toward the future-"friends that I'll get to know". good work!

I enjoy the metaphor that life is like the daily grind of driving a car. The ups and down, memories shared, the cantankerous and the joy of the ride itself. Enjoyed.

I'll be honest sallie- i really enjoyed reading this piece..it reciprocates forward motion
from the moment you start the car.. trying a few times before it gets going.. the imagery
keeps building in artful presentation..such poems are fun to be read over and over
i got a great sense of classic nostalgia.. or what memories are made of.. thank you for the ride

The Moon is Min

The Star is G---

and I keep drivin'

Ooo this was really nice. Open to many intepratations! like you refering to friends of old and friends yet to come. your driving up the road and round the bend, depicts the many curves of life, and the symbles that hold you to your faith. brilliant!!

The car and the drive become a meaphor for life. it is a simple idea very well executed. 'I pull out a cig' seems to mark a certain turning point in the poem as you now have the drive going and feel ready to relax a little. And yet as the poem continues there is a sort of urgency in the impetus.

Nice rhythm. We all carry our own patterns and routines around with us throughout our lives. It was nice to peek in on yours.

*but, I keep driving on and on....

I sooooo know that feeling. The only difference is that the nightly routine is my life now, night after night six nights a week every week ... sighs

I enjoyed this, thank you!
