Warming up for Work

Warming up for Work

A Poem by Bear
"

The nightly routine, decades ago; getting my car to start so I might get to work on time each night.

"

I'm just a sentimental fool......

I get in my car

and I pump the gas

I turn her over

2 or 3 times

Then sit for 5 or so

and let her get warm

I just want to get

Drivin'

Drivin' on and on.

     I throw her in gear

     and go up the drive

     I drive on and on

     down the road

I pull out a cig

and light it up

I go around curves

up and down hills

journey through life

as I drive

     on and on.

I go on by the light of the moon

the stars are gleaming overhead

I think of friends

that I have known

I think of friends

that I'll get to know.

     The Moon is Min

     The Star is G---

     and I keep drivin'

         on and on.

I have my symbols

with me all the time;

     hanging in my car

     hanging upon my skin

     hanging in my life

     hanging in my mind...

but, I keep driving on.

Driving on and on.

Thinking and hanging- two words that you repeat that brilliantly, simply, describe life! And what you think and what you hang on to, can certainly determine the quality of that life. Your tone is nostalgic, warm, and with purpose-get to work, get it done, but enjoy the ride and the memories along the way. Love it, truly... The feeling of living life in the moment-- driving around bends, enjoying a cig, looking at the moon, but relishing the past, and looking toward the future-"friends that I'll get to know". good work!

I like this poem and its form, well written. I'll bet a lot of over the road truckers can identify with this one. Thanks for sharing Bear!

I really liked this piece. I love to go cruising and either sing at the top of my lungs or think out loud. This really flows well and is a fun and a tad sentimental read. Very nice!

I remember the days when I drove for fun. Went drinking and dancing. Gas prices and economy slowed me down. I like this poem. I could use a road trip. A outstanding poem.

Your description of starting the car reminded me of my first car, exact samething.

I really like the free form on this one, it suits the piece. Sometimes the most mundane things make the best subjects.

Yup, been there and done that. It reminds me of Ground hogs day. Same old story day after day. Good work.
