Per Chance Part II

The Awakening

A plethora of memories invaded my mind like a flood;

A tsunami of emotions roared into my soul at once.

This part of my heart was shut up for so long

 The doors flew wide open for the love once forgone.

 A few seconds went by as I processed her being;

Was this really her?  But, oh, my mind and heart were agreeing.

Both a homecoming scene and yet many things to explain;

Warmth filled the room, there remained a heavy, dull pain.

As we flustered with words about how the years had gone by,

Once she brushed back her hair and her ring caught my eye.

Her words seemed to fade as I ruminated with questions

“Catch me up with you,” was her next suggestion.

Still wondering about her and the diamond on her finger,

I explained about the first few years, but felt no need to linger.

Two grown kids, career change and a deceased wife in the past,

My eyes left hers for the flames; it was her turn at last.
