Haze

Haze

A Story by Bea

The middle of summer, the hottest day of the year. And the driest too, no doubt. Everyone was inside, with the air conditioning blasting through their house. Outside, it was silent, aside from the occasional bird or cricket chirping. The sun was blazing down on the small village, bleaching the grass yellow and drying out the earth. Heat rose off the tarmac in a messy haze, blurring the air as the waves of heat rose up off the smooth black road.

The sun dropped in the sky as the hours passed and families arose from their midday siestas, fathers lighting barbecues as mothers prepared salads and children splashed about in their paddling pools. Laughter filled back gardens, the gentle chinking of wine glasses echoing in candle lit dining rooms, choruses of old songs roaring through pubs.

Summer.

Heat, laughter, fun, happiness. Holidays, days out, nights in. Memories.
