Picture Day Part 2

Picture Day Part 2

A Story by Brittany Carta

“How about we each pick an outfit we think would be nice for picture day and then you can choose one of those to wear. Does that sound good?”

Lola stared at Momma for a long minute, thinking.

“Ok, but it has to be COOL. Plus, it will be just like that cooking show Abuelito watches on TV. I will be the judge and you all will be contestants.”

Abuelito and Madre smiled. Momma shrugged her shoulders with a smile and said “ Whatever you like baby girl.”

After about 10 whole minutes of waiting Lola was getting impatient.

“ Ugh guys, you’re still with me right. Still on Earth- cause if not then i could always put my astronaut costume on and save you guys.”

“ Relax space cadet we are about finished”, said Madre.

“Ok then, Contestant 1 what have you got to show me!”

“ Just go with it- she’s having fun”, whispered Madre.

“ Well judge Lola, today I have put together an ensemble guaranteed to give you the best photo in all of picture day! A deep green dress with black tights and tap shoes. Also, I think a matching green bow would be adorable.”

Lola paused for only a second.

“Blech. I need something with pizzazz if I’m going to sit with the cool kids. Maybe for Christmas- contestant 1 you may step back.”

“Geez, tough crowd”, Abuelito said.

“ Contestant 2 you may step forward.”

Abuelito stepped up towards the bed.

“ Today judge Lola I have prepared an outfit that is foolproof. It’s guaranteed to make you look like snappy dresser; just like me! A pair of sleek black jeans with a blue button up and a tie. We can get you one just like mine.”

“ Hmm. I am a big fan of the tie idea- it says I mean business. The button however- is so last season. You may step back contestant 2.”

Momma gave a laugh.

“ What a critic you are”, she said with amusement.

“How about this, you liked the tie idea and I like you to look nice in pictures so why don’t we go to the store and pick you out a brand new dress and a tie that will fit. Remember how much you liked those black boots the last time we were there. Why don’t we get those and a that nice blue dress with the ruffles on the bottom that we saw and put a black tie with it.

“YES!, that outfit will ensure my place at the cool table. Style and power here I come.”

“Phew!, thank goodness”, said Aubelito.

“Our little fashionista diva”. Momma smilled wearily in Madres direction.

“Well, good luck you too. I’m going to take a nap in my room”

Two hours later all the girls were back from their shopping trip.

“ Abuelito did you make dinner ye? I’m starving!”

“ I made stew with salad and spanish rice, go on upstairs and wash princessa.”

Without a word she dashed up the stairs.

“ And put your new clothes on the hook by your door!, yelled Madre.

“ Went well then I take it.”

“ Yeah, well, as long as we could keep her on task. She saw the Halloween aisle and got all excited for that.”

“ You both realize we that means we have to do this again fairly soon”, said Momma.

Madre sat down and the table and Abuelito went back to watching his stew as though it held the winning lottery numbers.

“ Oh you two, and we say Lola’s the dramatic one”.
