To My SisterA Poem by baylaMy sister brings her political views into every conversation. I agree with many, but she gets annoyed when I disagree. Life is short, & we are slowly learning upon what to base our love.To Sharon, Though I wish we could go back in time… Be it a day, a week, a month a year To the few occasions, but, we can’t. It was more frequently, than not When the exchanges between us Were defined by issues Outside of ourselves Rather than by our core. You and I interact by what we believe we are, based upon social, political and racial existence of others, our own comfort level with those who are different than we I can’t take on the role of whom You wish I was, nor can you Take on the role of whom I wish you were But somehow, as we age We are beginning to identify in a favorable way As unique offspring, still of the same parents. And though we view the world divergently We are elated to belong As sisters who love, honor and respect The familial link between us That no one can destroy.
