Tenebris Ultores Chapter 2: Fallen Heroes

A Chapter by Sam Baxter
"

The Fallen have been hunted and now their final stand begins among the Ashes of Molov.

The enemy fortress was as worse built as a fortress built by a Ork warband and was easily recognisable as anything Librarian Avid had seen. Since that horrible bloodbath at what was now called by those who witnessed it the Fire-fight of the Falling White.
A month later and they finally found the haven to the Chaos Cultists after a Chaos Destroyer landed there. The four fallen that escaped the blood shed had left behind their hulking terminator armour in order to escape the mighty Librarian. The Sergeant of the Terminator Squad was now rumoured to now be leading this cult with his finest soldiers in the band as his bodyguard, but they will all fall. They were cowering behind their precious Aegis Defence lines that they scrapped together from probably destroyed ruins.
The Librarian looked over to the Colonel-Commissar and still couldn’t believe he was still standing after being blasted away, and neither he could believe that Marbo was only trapped under the debris of the exploding building he was in. The Colonel was now beside his men, despite the doctors orders. He had to respect the Colonel as he was like a living re-incarnation of what a mighty Astartes would do, he would fight until he couldn’t and even then he would. That blasted warp-storm was dealt with by Inquisitor Adrius and now Avid could breath easier.
“All forces in position?” He asked through his vox-link. Everyone was in position and he could see that from where he was standing but he had to be sure.
He was with his Devastators, under the command of Sergeant Jihad after Holed was stabbed to death when they got ambushed some time ago.
“Men, do not fail the Emperor today!” Shouted the Librarian.

“We shall take this church for the Emperor!” The Colonel raced forward, with co-Colonel Fist, the only survivor of the squad he lead back on the Fire-fight of the Falling White, a chain-fist cut him open but he survived as the ash sealed the wound. He was carrying the Grenade Launcher which belonged to the late Corporal Amos, a symbol of how the Forces of Order will always prevail. The Colonel smashed the door down and swept left and right. Nothing.
“Men, we will hold this sacred place in the name of the Emperor!” He nodded as they all trailed in, alert. It was a small church, based around a saint, but he couldn’t work out who it was. It looked like it was long abandoned, the ash-spiders and the other rodents who were a pest to this place overrunning it.

The new Tactical Squad under the command of Brother Ohed moved under the cover of the light ash storm that was brewing. They reached a reasonable cover. “Marines and Guard, I have a plan of attack that will work. We chop them up from our range and they will have to come to us, giving us more range. Short, detached bursts of fire to lay down cover so that we can slowly draw them out.” Came the Librarians vox-link and the Marines adjusted their bolters and set them to semi-automatic.
Brother Bakst peered around the corner with his missile launcher. “Tightly packed, this’ll be easy!” He laughed and took aim with his launcher. He calmed his nerves and pulled the trigger. The missile rushed from his metal cylinder with small gout of flame. A second later the ground rocked slightly and an explosion lit the skyline.
“Good kill, two dead, good kill.” The Librarian sighed.
Bolter fire made the victory cut short as Brother Bakst hid behind his shoulder pad retreated back around the corner. “Those damned b******s.” He spat as he looked at his wrecked shoulder pad.

“All Devastators line up fire, cross-hatch ‘em till they don’t move no more!” Sergeant Jihad whooped boisterously.
The Marines took aim and fires lit up the sky and ground. Those Aegis defence lines no good against their tearing fire and two more were shot off the Aegis hill.

Bolter-fire lit up the twilight as the enemy finally found them and rallied. “Sir, I don’t know what the enemies doing, but well have a look!” Jihad gave Brother Avid the Thermal binoculars and the Librarian bore his eyes into the scope.
“Then you know as much as me Sergeant, but they’ll show their hand soon enough!” He gruffly spat.
The Chosen accompanied by one of the Combat Squads and the Fallen Brother Vughs, moved to the west, in the cover of the ruins.

Sergeant Ohed turned away from the incoming Bolter fire to reload his own Bolter when he saw Brother Visage get blown into a bloody pulp and he fell back. He glanced over the dead comrade to see a mutilated Dreadnought standing there, solid and immovable. “We’re gonna have a problem here men…” He gulped.

“Marbo, it’s a good time to come in now!” The vox-link screeched in his ear and he quickly shut it off before adjusting his camo-cloak over him, ash covering the thing. “Not yet…”

The enemy was too concealed; the Bolter fire wasn’t doing anything. “Come on men, something’s got to happen!” The Librarian hollered on and the Sergeant wished he could plant a Chainsword between Avid’s shoulder blades, not for the first time either.

Librarian Brother Avid heard screeching from above and stared to see twisted beings beyond recognition of man or machine or daemon fall from the sky. No, they weren’t falling from the sky; they were flying towards the ground…
Only one thing in the Book of the Damned read this: Raptors.
They fell in the middle and screeched and everyone instantly ducked.
“Fire onto them now!” The Librarian bellowed, impatience trying to hide his fear. Real life Warp Creatures, nothing had prepared him for this.
They seemed to dance elegantly before the one on the left took aim at the Devastators and fired its plasma gun. A molten beam enveloped Brother Fujisan and he instantly turned into slag.

“What is that sound sir?” Asked Trooper Sid, standing up fully before walking towards the front of the Church.
Then he crumpled as auto-cannon fire ripped through his stomach, blood gushing instantly.
Everyone instantly hit the deck and any who weren’t frosty now were.

“Now.” Marbo slowly grabbed for his Demolition Charge and armed with one sleek move. He jumped up to his feet and threw it in the middle of the Chaos Marines and the Dreadnought.
He then went back into his Camo-cloak lying on his stomach.
“Job done.” He muttered. The Dreadnought started to spasm violently, black smoke gushing from its limbs. Then the Close Combat Weapon blew right off and exploded causing it to stumble a bit to the left.

The Raptors were just playing them and it was pissing off the Librarian to no end. “MISSILES TAKE THOSE DAMN MONSTERS OUT!” He yelled and the Sergeant yelped and nodded, taking aim with his Bolter with custom scope. He slowed his breathing and fired. One of the Raptors slumped down, a hole through its left eye. “Finally someone who can shoot!” The Librarian sounded almost relieved.
The Tactical Squad took aim with the Missile Launcher and it fired, catching one fully in the chest and the thing exploded into tiny fragments. One tried to escape by jumping, but a piece of Shrapnel got caught in the pack and it exploded the entire being in mid-air.
The other two were too fast.
“That’s it!” He bellowed at uttered an extremely creepy language that made the Sergeants hairs stand on end. Then Avid took aim with his Chainsword and a bolt of flame flew from the tip, enveloping another Raptor, the monsterity screaming as the flame licked at it. Then the Jet-pack exploded.

The Chaos were behaving differently and it alienated the Librarian. They were cowering behind this one piece of cover, out of range.
He turned his attention back to the last Raptor but it wasn’t there, but he could still feel its presence.
Then it screamed and blew through the roof of the Church.

The Colonel heard the screaming and ran out of the way before the Raptor burst through. It smashed through the roof, debris flying everywhere. A small meteor of Debris hit Trooper Glade in the neck, parting his head from his body. It landed and Corporal Gekas was instantly impaled by the Raptors lightening claws, torn away. It let out a howl of glee that chilled the Colonel to the very bone.

Brother Voids took careful aim through his scope onto the small slit on the Dreadnought that had claimed the lives of too many. He found his mark and fired.
There was a little chip away left by Marbo’s Demolition Charge, causing an exposed skull right where the brain was. The Emperor was watching over him and it instantly sat there, a dormant hulking wreck, wires twitching and failing.
Then it exploded.

“Get back men, this b******s mine!” The Colonel shouted with glee. He ripped out of its holster his power-sword and pointed at the evil twisted being. Apparently it knows a challenge when it sees one; he thought as the thing came charging at him. He ran forward with glee, a bounce in his step. No hesitation, no remorse, no mercy!
The thing swung its claws which he parried with ease and sent a swing at the Daemon, which the daemon blocked. They danced for the best part of five minutes, not one man giving the upper hand.
Then the Colonel thrusted and the Daemon stepped out of reach and the Colonel over-stepped.
The Raptor went in and stabbed the Colonel through the shoulder and a jolting searing pain was cast through his body. He cried out as he slumped.
But then raised his Power Sword under the armour.
Straight into the stomach and then ended up through its neck. It slumped forward and the Colonel pulled out the Power Sword. Then he grabbed the lightening claws and pulled it out with a scream. He stumbled a few steps and then fell to his knees. His comrades instantly rushed to his place. “Piss off, I’m fine, just a flesh wound!” He exclaimed as he shrugged off his comrades help.
“Sir I’m here to help, so sit down and I’ll sew up the wound.” The medic, Glide explained.
“Firstly, get some men to take out that damned corpse; don’t want the Emperor or the Unknown saint to be defile by the blood of the tainted.” He huffed out through gritted teeth.

The doors nearby the Tactical bursted open and a roar came from inside the ruined building. The Chosen sprinted out from cover and ran forward, traitors to mankind.

“Open fire; kill the Heretic, no mercy in the face of the enemy!” The Librarian shouted with a hint of glee in his voice.
The Tactical Squad, despite orders, used fully automatic on their bolters and sprayed the Chosen with shells. Two fell and the others went to ground, hiding their faces.
The Missile Launchers cracked open and a Chosen traitor went flying sideways through the building.
Then a Guardsman with a las-sniper took aim outside the church and fired, taking the Marine through the temple of its helmet and it slumped down, dead.

Marbo jumped as bullets sprayed at him. He pulled his camo-cloak over him and lied there, still as he could be. “Alive.”

The Chosen clambered to their feet and charged around the corner to face the automatic spray of the bullets of the Tactical Squad. They charge forward, easily shrugging off the hail of bullets whizzing their way. The fallen Brother who was the leader wasn’t so lucky, half his shoulder ripped away from him and he cried out, screaming in pain, but still got up and charged.

Sergeant Ohed grabbed out his chainsword and waited in stance, like he was taught, with grim determination deep within his eyes. The heretic shall burn in the flames of the Imperium!
A chosen decapitated Brother Gekas with his blade, the lifeless body slumping to the floor. The Sergeant ran forward and feinted right, but spun and the Chainsword met the face of the Chosen, biting through it instantly and half his face was cut off. He stepped over the body and charged forward towards the Fallen Brother Vughs. He swung wildly, catching the Brother in the side of the stomach, cutting through something important. The Fallen Brother slumped forward, but grinned evilly and sent his sword through Ohed and suddenly the Captain was on the floor, no pain, but no peace ever...

Librarian stared in awe at the heroism of the Marines and their sacrifice. The feats of the Colonel and all his Guard and many more. But there was still a rough road ahead. But for now he had to report to Ezekial on the dead Fallen he found and apparently he found half a dozen of them. Their bodies or what was left of them were on their way to the Rock and so was he. His training was finished and he was ready to become a full-fledged Librarian and he thought he deserved it, becoming one.
