And The Cradle Rocks

And The Cradle Rocks

A Poem by Brad Baum

Head rests against the cool, white wall,
Harsh images flicker from the subtle, dark shadows
That bounce from beam to beam within the caverns that lie below.
A turn of the knob, flick of the switch,
And the black of night overcomes the senses
As the eyes become blind.
By choice.
Clear, blue lights illuminate the cloudless sky
While the cratered face stares through the stone
At the boy without hands. The boy without legs.
He lies in a cradle, and grasps a star
Within his eye as the water runs cold,
A single tear to cry.
