U.S. Route 40

U.S. Route 40

A Poem by Brad Baum

America unfolds before my eyes,
Line after dashing line that skips
Along with the beating of my heart,
the yearning of my soul.
Confined by parameters of the blackened tar
That lies beneath my feet
Ever carrying us into the horizon, into the
open plain, the blue, brazen skies that offer
Protection, guidance, a sense of self, being, existence.
The minutest molecule that lives within the organism.
A speck against the backdrop,
A grain of sand taken from the rolling deserts
Of the wild, wild west.
Pictures that dance within the memories of our technological minds,
Ever yearning to break the petty confines.
Meaning attributed to
The journey, the scene, the open road.

A excellent poem. I crossed U.S Route 40 many times. I was station in Texas. Took 40 all the way home to Michigan. Your words are true. Old highways are pleasure to people who love the road. A excellent poem.
