clandestine captains

clandestine captains

A Poem by Joe Barone

and sometimes
we act reckless
and careless
because maybe
that is how
we truly feel
and how we want to
treat ourselves.
we drink and do drugs
we smoke cigarettes
filter and all
we wake in strange houses
party with strange people
ingest strange things.
that make us see things and
feel funny
and that make us laugh uncontrollably
we smoke things
that provide another reality
we snort things that
widen our eyes
and we perspire
we laugh, and then touch each other
enjoying the sensations
we drink and
vomit wherever
in the house, outside
in a car's interior.
in a dark parking lot
behind a convenience store
we drive anywhere, all over
just to get away with these things.
we don't tell
others
about it, too often.
and when we do
we are seen
as
criminals
scum
horrifying things
going nowhere
yet we are
moving
in our minds
our lives.
and what we do
helps
and expands it all
it is seen clearly
by ourselves.
we can't remember it all
yet we have seen it all
in ourselves
by ourselves
or with others.
they know
what to do, how to act
how to speak
what to say, and to whom
and then we acquire
again, again, again
against.
