In a trunk old and rotten,
lay sad Alice long forgotten,
hid beneath a pile of forms
of little girls all adorned
in their dresses and their curls,
painted faces and shiny pearls.
For years she waited, silently, beneath
the other dolls in a heap.
I saw first her stems and pointed toes
and reached for them below her knees.
Gingerly I picked her out
and held her close to my chest.
Only one chip on her cheery face
on her chin and out of place.
For everything else lacquered on,
had barely changed or worn at all.
Her dress, once blue, and now dull gray
held her life in its soiled decay.
The fragile apron, once white and floating
above the blue, was partly torn and ruffles missing.
All she needed was a little love-
some gentle handling with white kid gloves.
I took her home and washed her limbs
undressed her slowly and picked at her hems.
I remade her dress, apron and ribbon for her hair.
I did not touch the painted places, but left them as they were.
And now she shines, clean and young again,
atop my dresser, sixty-something years later, she's ready for wonderland.
