Blessing on 7th.AveA Story by Countryman47Angel Intervention for a coupleBlessings on 7th.Ave Times were so bad all around us,no jobs to be found, people wandering aimlessly on the streets, soup kitchens kept at least a few fed.It was the time of the great depression. My wife and I ran an orphanage and the little bit of help we got wouldnt even feed the kids. The girls would take in sewing and the boys would do any odd job they could find to help.We were so close to reaching a point that we could no longer survive. My wife and I were Christians and tried to raise the children to know God.We could never have any children of our own,so we were so proud when we opened the orphanage and be able to raise children,we loved each and every one as our own. I knew the time would come we would have to sit the children down and be honest with them about what was to come.We needed food, clothes for the kids,so much but no real hope but prayer. We had always helped anyone we could simply because it was the Christian thing to do.Laura said to me,Jim you seem so worried, what is wrong?I told her we were close to not being able to take care of the children any longer and it looked as though they would have to be sent to State run homes, which I knew was a terrible place for them to be.I told her I didnt understand why God had not answered our prayers, she said, How do you know he hasnt? We agreed to hold on as long as we couild and face one day at a time.I agreed not to say anything to the children unless it became necessary. After supper that night,I went to the front door stoop to get the paper,I noticed an old man standing in the street, his clothes were worn and ragged and his shoes had holes in them.My heart went out to him,I said you look hungry and cold would you like to come in and have some food and warm up?He looked at me and smiled and said yes,yes I would.Laura fixed him a plate of food,I asked him how long has it been since you have had anything to eat?He said a while. As ragged and torn as he was there was something about his smile and the twinkle in his eye, that just made me feel comfortable with him. After supper we sat down by the fire and talked. He told me had been unable to find any work for months and had survived by the kindness of others. He said as bad as times are there is still a lot of good in the world.I said I agree with you it is just a time of good people going through bad times they did not create. I brought all the children down to meet him,he enjoyed talking with them and they with him.He was a kind man, that was easy to tell.Something very special about him.He asked how long we had run the orphange,I said about 12 years, but how did you know they were orphans?I had not told him,he simply said I just knew.He also said I know you and your wife are good Christian people and have tried to raise the kids with Christian values,I also know that because of the times you are nearing a point that you will no longer be able to take care of the children,I was stunned and amazed at what he said or how he knew but for some reason I didnt question him,I said only you are right and I dont want to see it happen. Then he said something that shook me to my core,he said I know you have been praying for help, just know God has heard your prayers.
Laura asked if he would spend the night with us and he agreed,I told
Laura to give him some of my clothes and shoes and a coat.He said Thank
You for your kindness and went off to bed.The next morning we had
breakfast fixed and I told Sue,one of my kids,to tell our visitor it was
time to eat,she went up to his room and came back and said he is
gone.No one had seen him leave. We spent the rest of the day wondering
who he was and why he had left.A few days passed,I was getting bills I
could not pay,our food was almost gone and the worry started again. The next morning I heard the sound of trucks outside.I opened the door and saw 20 tractor trailers lined down the street. One man came up the steps and asked if this was 534 7th.Ave,I said yes it was,but what is all this.He said we have orders to deliver all that is on the trucks to you.I asked who had sent it, He said the consigner remained annoymus and he did not know.It took 5 hours to unload all the trucks, they were full of food and clothes supplies so much we needed, all the children pitched in to help,I had never seen them so excited.Of course there were toys for them.Mr.Roberts,the mailman, came up the steps and said Jim I have a special delivery fior you,so I signed for it and he went on about his route.I opened the envelope,it was a cashiers check for $100,000.00.It was signed by the bank president, but on the bottom was a note that said God Bless You,Bless Others.Laura and I were overwhelmed with all that had happened,we found a bigger home and spent the rest of our years taking care of the homeless and hungry, and our kids. The children grew, found jobs and helped us through the years. If you believe Angels don't walk the earth, you are wrong,be kind to everyone, you never know when your Angel may come along:0) © 2016 Countryman47 |
