Flames

Flames

A Poem by B

Do feelings ever go away?
We can bury them deep down
Beneath years of denial and regret
But are they ever really gone?
How do you extinguish a fire?
That is never going to run out of fuel?
You don’t.
You smother the flame
Until it is nothing but a small flicker.
That hides behind your eyes.
It is the first touch.
The first time that he looked at you
And you knew he was really looking
Into something deeper than your eyes.
The first time that he kisses you
Under the large oak tree in his yard.
The butterflies building up so heavily
You think that you could float.
The endless memories that leave you
Curled up on the shower floor
Reaching
Trying to wrap yourself back in them.
Because maybe
Just maybe
If you keep the flame lit
The fire can start again.
