Which Is Better, Religion or Humanism? Answer: Neither!A Story by Father Mojo
Everybody believes that their thing is the right thing. Everyone believes that their religion, or politics, or ideology, or whatever is the most enlightened, the most life-affirming, the most peaceful, the most rational. It is easy to spot abuses from institutions that have been powerful for hundreds and even thousands of years, but we forget about the ones that are less than a century old.
Secular Humanists and atheist are quick to point out all the abuses and death and wars that have been caused by religion, but they fail to acknowledge that in the 20th century Humanists and atheists killed more people in war and by other means (like Mao' Cultural Revolution and Stalin's entire political reign) than all of the religious throughout all of history. If you're going to shove The Crusades in my face over and over, I'm going to respond with Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and a host of others who killed millions. In fact, if you have an atheist leader running your country, there is a nearly 60% chance that you and a sizable portion of the population will be killed. Now all of this is not meant to bad-mouth Humanists or Atheist, just to remind them that they are no better than the crap they spout off against. Humanists and Atheist are no more Enlightened or peaceful or rational than any other group of people. They have proven to be at the very least, just as violent, irrational, and unenlightened as religious rulers, and they have often proven to be more brutal when in positions of power. So the next time you are tempted to think and express how your religion (or lack thereof), or ideology, or politics, or economics, or anything else is better than someone or something else, just ask yourself one simple question: "Am I human?" If it turns out that you are, in fact, human, then shut up because you're just as full of s**t as everyone else. The issue really is not religion or lack of religion or politics or any other external concept or idea, the issue is that human beings have an irrational need to define who we are by demonizing another, making them the "other" or the "them." As long as we are only going to allow ourselves to know our own good (collectively or individually) by projecting evil on another, then your religions or your ideology or your politics, or your whatever will never be peaceful and rational, but fearful and reactionary. Religion is not the problem; human beings are the problem. Lack of religion is not the problem; human beings are the problem. Let's solve the problem, and the other stuff will fix itself. © 2013 Father Mojo |
