Phrases as soft as brush-strokes,
carefully shaded to hide the most obvious interpretation
Lines as hard as rough sketches,
pointedly overlaying, re-doing, re-
shaping an image,
clear as a photograph, and as layered as reality
Watch the eyes take shape, stare back at their creator,
smirking with some secret memory that you inadvertently whispered
I think you did it, you painted a picture of
painting a picture with words.
You did it well , now I will have to look at the
rest of your writing, because I know from this
poem that you are capable of making us, the
readers see beyond the colors and in to the
shapes of the creatures you have built in our minds.
Nice poem. Thank you.

I enjoyed this. It takes a familiar concept, poetry as word portraiture, and breathes some new life into it by amplifying the metaphor.
"... carefully shaded to hide the most obvious interpretation..."
It's probably just me and my overactive political brain, but your closing words, "just words," had me thinking about the Barack Obama plagiarism kerfuffle. (You probably don't know what I'm talking about, and that's probably a good thing...) :-D
Very good write!
