Oppression

Oppression

A Poem by Joel

Yielding to the motion of crashing waves,
step ashore at one with elements raging
all said to be apart, yet at once whole

Wherefore or where to seek
for then it's as a moment's haste
assimilated, no, imprisoned
by time mourning
the road ahead
as even then
hollowed by foresight
it slips toward longing
for a time it was

I didn't understand this poem at all (I rarely do), but this certainly evoked emotion. I'm not sure what you were talking about or how the title reflected the poem's content, but as I read it, I could feel an underlying sorrow. I liked the imagery in the first stanza and how the line "all said to be apart, yet at once whole" added a metaphysical feel to this piece. I appreciated the second stanza because of how it sounded profound. The last line really helped to add harmony to this piece.

I'm not sure why, but this poem reminded me of "Roses Only" by Marianne Moore.
