The Worlds Largest TreehouseA Story by Kristina Marie
If you leave Nashville, TN on route 40 east towards NC, you will see a lot of countryside. I've always loved drives like that because it's so easy to wonder about the lives of the people who live in those mountains and valleys. If you didn't know what you were looking for, Crossville TN is just another name on a green reflecting exit sign in the middle of no-where. But, if you take just the right turns off the exit, and they don't tell you which ones to take, you will arrive at the worlds largest tree-house.
The tree-house was built by a man named Horace and it took him eleven years to build. It features 4 levels and even has a room with pews and an alter. Horace says that God told him to build it and the tree-house is free to enter. I went there on a mildly warm spring day in May 2012. I'll never forget the alter room. On the second floor stood a room with benches carved from trees and an alter with a bible open on it. The room felt so enchanting to me. The floorboards were not tight together and through the spacing I could see the hot, brown, Tennessee dirt. The place also features horses on site that you can pay to feed, and a small concession area to buy water and soda. They have outhouses in their parking lot and even mowed their grass to spell out religious phrases that can only been seen from the top of the tree-house. Sadly, in 2014 it was deemed condemned by the town and forced to shut down to the public.
