Aria's TaleA Story by AxilyaWhat if it was all real once upon a time? And what would happen if it was all coming back? In fact, magick was going to tear apart this world and I am here to stop it.I kept staring at the nameless tossing sea. I would die here, yet that thought did not bother me. As I closed my eyes tightly, I realized, I was ready. It all began very long ago, the echoes of the past catching up to me. These memories so bittersweet, they form my memoir of the yesterday. My name is Aria. I opened my eyes and looked over at her. Her ghastly form seemed to be ethereal as a ghost. Her hair tossed wildly in the strong winds that came forth from the sea. I took her hand in mine and grasped it. She was Aura. I am the color of life, and she the white of inexistence. Our purpose was clear, she offered a small smile to me and we began.
I stared around me amazed and I studied closely my surroundings. The rays of light cast forth from the sun shaded my surroundings like fog. Where they cast upon the cement and tar which was strangely a small circle in the middle of the field, the water turned into vapor and rose up in a swirling mass. I bit my lip tightly and stared around me. I reached out a hand as if to capture a ray of light to carry with me. Alas, no one can catch the sun. I heard my name called out from the distance and turned to see who it was. I looked over and saw no one. I was just hearing a thing, that’s normal right? Sighing inwardly to myself, I decided to head home. The dying rays of the afternoon sun were cascading across the sky performing a clash of colors that mesmerized and yet perfectly blended into one another seamlessly. Raising a hand, delicately I pushed back the hair from my face as I got up from the grassy field. I walked to the edge of the field and looked back feeling as if I was missing something about to happen. I shook my head and plunged into the shaded lush forest. The strangest thing was I had found my place to this field in the middle of this gigantic forest by accident one day. I had decided to take a walk in the morning like I usually do and then before my eyes I had noticed the way the moss grew, the trees grew, and the brown and golden leaves upon the ground, they formed a path. That was last fall. I kept feeling a calling to come back here; it always put me at ease. I stopped in the middle of the path and looked up at the trees, the golden sun light playing across the leaves. I knew I had to hurry to get home, since twilight was quickly approaching, and the creatures of the night would begin to awaken. Tonight was a full moon; my mother had taught me the lore of the night, involving the creatures that came out in the night. My mother said that is the only time when they are safe to come out, for they are so inhuman that humans would crucify them. Well maybe that is a lie, but it is still nice to believe, that such creatures and magic existed, but they are only fairy tales of old. Instead of walking, I dashed like a model track star through out the forest, my feet falling into the right places as not to fall or trip over rocks or roots. Trees are known to trip over people says mother, for the faeries and dryads that live within them want revenge upon the humans. They are kept here between here and there, there being the otherworld, by humans. Mom says Avalon is one such place that is between here and there too, but no one has been there in man years for the priestesses do not come back. Mom says it is all the humans fault about all the misconceptions of all good spirits and the magic that would help many people. I’ve never heard any myths or lies like these before, it is hard to believe that mom really believes in this stuff. Before I knew it, the forest melted away into the backyard of the cabin looking house. It was always too stuffy or to cold, but mom liked to live this way, very natural. She is a witch of course; most children would probably say that it is pure fallacy, but I know better, I have seen my mother heal and talk to the animals. Mom says too that one day two twins would be born that would return the world to as it should be, unified between the three worlds, here, in-between, and there. She says that magic will return to the world, but we can only use the "life" of our bodies to perform magic. This all seems too unreal, but I like to listen to the stories mother tells me about all the Folk from there. She tells me of the deeds of the Gods, the Greeks, the Celts, the Norse, even the Tuath De Dannon. I do not believe her, but she says we are descended from the Tuath De Dannon. I smile seeing a candle in the window; this lets me know mom is waiting for me. I enter the dark cabin and approach mom cheerfully and talk about how her day went. Despite how it inconvenient for traveling to work, mom enjoys the forest as much as I do. Mom is still modern though, with a refrigerator, stove, microwave, even a computer, we even have modern lights. Mom is very pretty too, with short wavy and in a way, bouncy brown hair. Her eyes are a deep emerald green with depths uncounted for. She is constantly wearing brown and green, which really brings out her beauty. The only thing I share with her is her eyes. I am taller than her by a good couple of inches and I have long flaming red hair. She never speaks about my father, nor does she seem to have any interest in men. I wonder if she had a bad experience. All too soon, the sun faded away into night and mom had to turn on the lights in the room to continue making dinner. Tonight’s dinner was a vegetarian lasagna and it smells really excellent. When mom serves dinner for the two of us, we always thank the earth for providing us with food it is kind of like the Christians who thank their God for the food. We always ate, laughed, and talked; this was how it had always been between the two of us. "Aria how was your trip into the forest? Was their any beautiful sites that captured your eye?" "Mom, I saw the most amazing scene with sunshine today!" We laughed together as I told her about earlier. Even if it was only the two of us, silence never came upon the house. As long as we had each other, we would be fine, for there was always the two of us. "You know honey, school begins in two weeks, and we need to go into town to get supplies for you. You really need to meet other teenagers your age." "But mom!" "No buts. You are getting too much of a handful these days, besides work has become really demanding. I have a chance for promotion and with that we can do some more with our house." I nodded quietly not wanting to argue for my mother’s sake. Mom worked in a large company and for a long time she home schooled me. I adored my mom and she was my only friend in the world. She seemed set on a new horizon and it scares me a little. I did not know the cause, I am afraid to ask. She said at sixteen one really needs to learn and experience the whole world out there. I stared at her back as she picked up our empty plates and washed them in the sink. What was this frightening change? It was all over in the air. With a sigh I got up, bade good night to mom and went into my room, quietly shutting the door. I curled up into a ball on my bed, it being to warm to be under the covers, but me needing comfort for myself. It was hard, maybe this was how it was for parents who had to watch their children go off to college or one day wake up and realize and say "Oh my god, my child is an adult" or some such. It’s really sad and hurtful and you do not know what to do. Closing my eyes, the sounds of the sea seemed to fill my ears, the waves crashing down again and again, as I drifted away into unconsciousness. © 2008 AxilyaReviews
