Cope

Cope

A Poem by aDub
"

This poem was written a few years ago, inspired by Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried," a book about US soldiers during the Vietnam War.

"

Twirling and tiptoeing,
Round and round I went,
Through the smoke, through the silence.
I danced on death's doorstep.

The fireworks had ceased long ago,
And the metal birds flew far, far away,
To grace others with the bright stars that tumble down from the sky.
I danced where they once touched the earth.

The ghosts have arrived,
They moved throughout the realm with such a solemn face
That only the dead could conceive.
I danced in their path.

But the dead should be left alone.
So I let them float about,
Poking and prodding at a world that did not belong to them.
Still, I danced.

I silenced the world with my palms
Until the screams faded away with the ash
And the sounds of drums and singing filled my ears.
And I danced, and danced, and danced.
