When she can't bear the painA Poem by The Avid BibliophileI run up to my room, where I lay My head in my hands and start to pray I close my eyes as they start to fight I know she’ll be in for it tonight I hear a crash and than a scream He’s using her to let off his steam My mother is his punching bag “You b***h!” he screams, “You s**t! You hag!” What could she have ever done To deserve violence from this scum? I can hear her pleading, “ I smell her fear from the floor below Now I can’t stand it anymore This pain that must be in store For her, my wonderful mother Who wouldn’t ever hurt another Abandoning my safe refuge I know I have nothing to lose I run downstairs to stop the fight Or else he might kill her tonight! A strangled cry; “Go back to bed!” I’m terrified she’ll wind up dead “Don’t you touch her!” I scream with rage I’m in control, taking centre stage He grabs her neck and shakes her hard But I stand firm and on my guard “Let go! Don’t touch her! Don’t you dare!” And fix him with a steely glare He hesitates but then does so Turns away and starts to go My mother holds me, close and tight So close that I can feel her fright She lets out a deep, deep sigh And I say as she starts to cry, “He won’t hurt you anymore It won’t be like it was before.” © 2010 The Avid Bibliophile |
